Here come the varietal!

“Varietal” wines or “table wine” are those wines for which it is possible to indicate the vine and the year of production on the labels, without any reference to the production area.
Their production is provided by the rules regulating the new common organization of the market in the wine sector.

By Ministerial Decree No. 381 of March 19, 2010 the Italian Ministry listed a list of varieties of grapes usable in Italy in the reference in labeling of varietal wines that aren’t DO-IGT. This possibility is limited to certain international vines and in the specific case:

  • Cabernet
  • Chardonnay
  • Merlot
  • Sauvignon
  • Syrah
